Tape Box says October 1968 - Dictation says 1966 - Check Carefully Please

Eileen went over to pick up Linda, Thanu and baby. Took Karl with her. My hands wouldn’t let me do anything much, so best for me to stay up in my room. Thanu took Linda out as Linda wanted to go out for dinner and dancing. Cindy looked after Linda’s baby until Helen got home. I never did go downstairs. Heard the taxi stop out in front, let Thanu and Linda off. Must have been about 12:30 or 1 a.m. Just what time folks went to bed, I did not know.

10/2/66

When I woke up I thought I would go to church, but seeing it was raining I thought the way I felt it would be best to stay home. Around 1 p.m. went to Helen’s, Sonny and Karl and Linda’s baby went to a picnic in Knowland Park given by the Heart Association. Tickets were $1.50 I think and they served buffalo meat, salads and other things. Started to rain again, Helen said, so some of the people went home. Claude was home Helen had said Sonny could fix him some dinner.

10/2/66

Sonny went with Helen. Here I thought he was in his room asleep or I would have tried to fix Claude dinner. Helen had made Linda a cake so when they came back from the park picnic, Helen iced the cake then put candles on for Linda, so we had cake and ice cream before Helen took Sonny and went home. Karl went with them. I cleaned up the mess in the dining room and kitchen just fixing. Came back up to my room. When Helen came back worn out, she thanked me for cleaning up. Wasn’t easy the way my hands felt, but wanted to help Helen. Seemed like no one of the rest of them does. I come down, watch t.v. 9 p.m. to 10, then came up, got ready for bed. Heard Helen laughing, so just had to go down and see what she was watching. Soon found out it was a real funny show.

10/3/66

Helen taken Karl to Tiny Tots but came back. Didn’t work today. I had just come down for my breakfast. Had bathed. Didn’t yesterday, was kind of hard getting in the bath tub. I fixed some soup out of broth left over and corned beef and lamb, put grated carrots, celery cut up real fine, also green peppers, green onions, barley, rice, green beans bay leaf, also macaroni soup. Came out fine. Tasted good. I fixed some milk for Karl, also a bottle for myself. Washed up the mess, came back up to my room, had a nap a little, got up went down stairs, Karl was up running around without his pants and shoes, but said his mama would put them on him. She finally came down as had to see about dinner, so I came upstairs. Wanted to read some more out of Oliver Bean’s books.

10/3/66

GG called today. She was over to Lee Ann’s place so I got to talk to her for a while. _____ wasn’t working, been laid off. GG had been out trying to get a job. Helen told GG about me falling, so I had to go in to tell about it for her.

10/4/66

I walked down to the post office put a letter and money order to Radio Bible Class, air mail. Helen picked me up in front of the post office, had new lady friend, one she met at this club she3 had been going to on Mondays and Thursday nights. Helen was also going to school as she’s taken Karl over to June’s. Karl played with Ann Marie only three days between them. Helen dropped me off at Catherine’s place. I had a nice visit. Got to see Bennie and her two youngest children. Growing real fast. The baby’s so cute.

10/4/66

Ruth came. First time seeing her for 2 or 3 years. She looks good. George came in and picked up his check but he didn’t turn and look at me. But I didn’t say anything. Catherine gave him his check, that was it. David came in and right out after picking up his mail then Ruth’s boy who 15 next to her youngest who is 7 now. I didn’t see him, only down the street on his bike. Sure has grown a lot. Kenny is working swing shift now. Honey getting new washer. She showed picture to me out of catalog, was to be brought out and set up on Thursday, think she said. Letter came today from Viola telling me her mother has to be put in a nursing home, soon as is opening for her. Viola wants to move as near as she can to where her mother will be in the home. Then she can go and visit her often. I took her letter over to Catherine so I could read it. There’s lots of news about different ones. Viola and Geneva’s family. Catherine brought me home 8:30 p.m. I was in the kitchen for some time but Karl didn’t know if he was watching t.v. Claude brought Karl up so he could go to bed and I gave him a drink and tucked him in. Heard his prayers. He settled right down without any fuss at all. Was 12 or after before Helen came home. I had her locked out. She finally got Claude to open the door for her. I heard the pounding but it never dawned on me had the screen door locked. So used to keeping it locked so Karl won’t get out. I did up dishes then came upstairs, went to bed and read a while but was after Helen came home before I went to sleep.

10/5/66

Helen told me Karl was at Linda’s yesterday. Tried to call me but got no answer as I was at Catherine’s, I guess. Helen wasn’t home either, so while Helen took Karl to Tiny Tots I called, finally talked to Paul and he said he would be home after 1:30. When Helen came home, had lunch and started down to see Paul. She had to stop and get gas and oil, came to $4.60, then Karl wanted to go to the bathroom out on the freeway. He waited until he got to GG’s where there was a pay phone and Karl went in to see GG could go with us. Helen phoned to say we were on our way to Paul’s. Paul looks real good. He’s lost weight which I’m glad. Hope he doesn’t gain it back. Saw Marjorie’s mother. Was her day off. She was working over at the church as a serving lady. Met today. My, how Paul’s children are growing.

10/5/66

Daniel is going to be 6 feet tall if he keeps on. Girls sure growing up also. Paul came down on the bus yesterday. If he can’t get a job then he’s going to go back up to Bend, Oregon on Monday the 10th. That’s the reason Helen took me down to see him. It’s been 4 months since he stopped by to see me on his way up to Oregon. Glad got to see him, also children. Sorry missed Marjorie. Her day off is tomorrow. Saw GG, Mason was home sick. Floyd drove up as we were leaving. He got this teeth all pulled out so he wouldn’t bite us. Ha Ha. He said when he got his teeth Floyd seemed happy over his teeth, so guess he’ll be able to use them. We stopped at Claude’s friend on the way home. He looked since his operation. Same kind Paul had only she’s older than Paul. Helen told Claude where we went and why. He was okay with smog over the hills and town today. Not cold.

10/6/66

Lady came, picked up Karl, took him to Tiny Tots. It was Claude’s day off so Helen really wanted to sleep in but didn’t get a chance. Karl woke her up and she had to see about him. Then Claude woke up so Helen had to fix his breakfast and she did about 3 loads of laundry but didn’t hang them out. Helen had to go to school and Claude came upstairs asking if Karl was dressed and watching t.v. Claude said Karl was asleep on the rocker. I covered him up. He slept until just before Helen came home. She got dinner than take Karl and laundry down on Lakeshore, got things dried, or some of them. Helen was going out to a meeting at Tiny Tots, so she couldn’t wait for all the things to dry. I did up the dishes, made a cake out of barley flour, chocolate, used up some of the old yogurt. When Karl came in, he said, oh, Grandma, whatever you’re cooking sure smells good. He ate three pieces after cold. We finished up the ice cream. I made some orange jello with peaches and bananas, also mailed a letter and birthday card to my sister Geneva. She sent me a card which came today, also a letter, which I was pleased to get. She was waiting for an opening to the nursing home. Karl was still up when Helen came home but she soon put him to bed. He had napped for such a long time this afternoon. We were watching a funny show on t.v. when Helen came home. John came over to see Claude, guess it was about stamps. I had to let him in. Claude didn’t hear the doorbell at all even though he was sitting in the front room.

10/7/66

Helen went on new job, had to be there by 8 a.m., so I had to be up, see Karl off when lady stopped by after him. Also gave lady for Karl going to Tiny Tots School. Was 8:45 a.m. when car honked out in front. Karl said, here she is and when they left I came up, did the rest of my bathing and dressing and went down and did some laundry by hand, my undies, nighty, Karl’s 12 pairs of socks. When Helen came right after noon, saw I had been hanging up laundry. She said, this worries me, mother, you might slip and fall again. But, step wasn’t wet, so it didn’t bother me. Helen and Karl went down for a nap after lunch. I came up also and it was about 4:45 p.m. I went down, fixed garbage pails.

10/7/66

Brought in laundry, put away. Also fixed milk for Karl and myself. Ate my dinner, came back up in my room, lay down, read awhile. Helen came down as I came up, so she fixed dinner. Karl was still asleep. At 110:30 p.m. came back up in my room after going down and doing the dishes and putting away food. Helen gave me 25 cent stamps for my birthday which was very thoughtful as I use a lot of stamps. Today was nice, not chilly or warm. Helen stayed up, watched t.v., even knowing she was going to work tomorrow.

10/8/66

Helen went to work after 9 a.m. Claude left later. On Saturday, 9/1, I think, a letter came from Nancy. Fern. Also a beautiful birthday card. A card from Myrtle postmarked Greenfield, W. VA, but note inside was written in Ashland, KY at Anita Oliver’s, so must have drove on to Greenfield, W. VA, most likely forgot to mail the letter before leaving Wenita. Claude also received nice letter from Hazel. I’m so glad she wrote. Also glad Nancy and Fern was here when Helen and Claude home so she could see for themselves how good Helen and Claude are to me. I looked after Karl today. He was real bored. Eat his lunch, seemed to enjoy what I fixed for him. He took a nap first and went to sleep in the rocker. I asked him to get over on the couch. He finally did. I covered him up. He slept until after his mother came home.

10/8/66

I did some ironing, had some things in mind, so while iron was hot, did up Karl’s things. Some needed mending, so fixed them. Also made some dressing for the lamb. Had tonight for dinner. Claude came in so late on Saturday, I ate earlier, was up in my room, just stayed until almost 9 p.m., when down, did up some dishes, put away food. Karl wanted something more to eat, so fixed him some of my Jello. He seemed to like it real well. Helen was reading a book when I came back up in my room. Rolled my hair, so guess I better go to bed. Wanted my hair to look better. I did feel up to going to church.

10/9/66

Went to church this morning, walked down. It was so warm, really didn’t need a jacket. Was a guest speaker who gave the sermon. The Pastor read 135 Psalms. Rev. Ord Morrow, former Pastor of Grand Avenue Alliance Church who is now associated with the ____ to the Bible Broadcast Radio. The lady who brought me home Thursday night, 9/8, wanted my address. Said she missed me this last Thursday, 10/6, but I didn’t feel up to going out and/or last Sunday. Walked home, then Helen and Karl and all went shopping. Bought $9.30 things. Cashed my October check. Bought things so Helen could make me a birthday cake. Carrots, pineapple, nuts in it. Helen was tired out. Karl wouldn’t take a nap. I noticed what time it was so went and asked her if I should go down and fix dinner which I haven’t since 9/28. Wasn’t easy, but I did get by.

10/9/66

Also set table. Cleared it, did dishes, grated carrots for the cake which she made after putting Karl to bed. We all watched t.v. first, though. I’m up in my room. Can smell the cake. Sure smells good. I get all the cooking odors coming up here in my room, good and bad. Last year Nancy made me a cake, Cindy iced it. Was Jello box cake. White icing. First time Nancy had ever made me a birthday cake as well as I can remember. We are many miles apart this year, but I know she will be thinking of me. Already sent lovely card and nice long letter addressed to her sweet mother on her 69th birthday. Guess the postman thinks she’s a nut by now, as she done this for Mother’s Day, think also Christmas, yet mother is getting older each year. Have two great grandchildren now.

10/10/66

Helen took Karl to Tiny Tots Play School. Was Helen’s day to work, so she didn’t come home until after 12 noon.. Asked if Claude had come in yet as he went to doctors for check up. Helen didn’t want to leave or go any place until Claude came in. She had packed his lunch, but he said that he would come back to the house before going to the store, which he did. By the time he left again for work this time, was 2:10 p.m. before we started over to GG’s place, taking cake and ice cream. GG came out to the car as Debbie was home sick. Also was still under the weather last Wednesday. Mason was home with flu. Seems to hang on him long this time, so Helen, Karl and I went out in back. GG brought out dishes, spoons, knife to cut cake. Large spoons to dish up ice cream. The wind was so strong we never did get the candles to stay lit, so could blow them out, but we had fun. Visited Floyd. He came, he not working right now. Said he could eat with his teeth okay. Was nearly 5 p.m. when we went back home. Helen put beans on. I came up in my room, changed, lay down, read then I think must have napped. Helen came up asked if I would go down and watch her dinner and put on coffee. She had fell asleep and Claude was home. She had potatoes on but didn’t take long to get dinner on the table though. Helen got Karl ready for bed then she went out with one of her club ladies. After I finished in kitchen, came in and watched t.v. Phone rang, Karl answered. Was aunt Ruby, he said. I was really surprised. If it had been Dorothy, I wouldn’t have been surprised. Ruby has been sick for 2 or 3 weeks, but feeling pretty good now. She had over done it. Hadn’t eaten right and the doctor put her on a diet. Johnny also said hello to me. _____ Jean and family stay at home but have house moved and have to get wiring in it and have a good well. Boys are fine. Ruby’s little grandson is fine. Everyone seems happy. Was 10 p.m. before Karl went to bed. Must have been 9:30 when Ruby called. Was real late when Helen came home.

10/11/66

Woke up early but went back to sleep. Kind of chilly, so bed felt good. Wasn’t any real reason to get up early anyway. Was surprised when Helen called, good buy, mother. I saw it was 9 a.m. by my time. Turned on the radio. Sure enough, I missed one of my radio programs here at 8:30 a.m. A new one for me anyway. Comes on at 9 a.m. the other one is at 9:30, but sometimes I am afraid I may wake Karl up if I put the radio on so early. Used to hear them at night, but don’t any more for some reason. I seem to be late with everything today, Bible study, prayer, exercise, bath, dress, so on. Card came today for Helen from her Aunt Ollie Perry. Was mailed in Bluefield, W. VA. Ollie and Myrtle having a wonderful time. One of Dave Thompson’s boys took Myrtle and Ollie around. I fixed Karl lunch as Helen had to go, was on the run. Karl was real good, though. Didn’t nap. I washed out 2 pairs of socks of Karl’s, hung up laundry downstairs that Helen had left in the washer. Got up _____ was on the lines, put Karl’s slacks out. Did look like rain. Helen came home from art class, took Karl down on Lakeshore to get his hair cut. Both needed it bad. I was on the phone talking to Catherine. She told me Paul was at her place Friday, 10/7, had supper with her. Said if he didn’t get a job he was going to go back up to Oregon on Tue. 10/11. Don’t know if he went or not. Later Catherine called me. She had talked to one of the Butrin girls, the younger one. It was the older girl who works at Goodwill Store in Oakland. Catherine tried to see Mrs. Butrin Sunday, she had been put in a rest home five years. Catherine thought I would like to know the girl called her tonight. Dorothy called to wish me a happy birthday. Tried last night but the line was busy. Must have been after 10 p.m. as was watching _______ program. It had been on awhile. Then Dorothy and Richard coming over Friday, the 14th. Will see us then. Asked me to call Catherine to see if she would be home Friday morning. Wanted to see __________, so Helen’s going to try if she can get a hold of her. Helen fixed dinner tonight, but I did the dishes. Should be in bed long ago. Think Helen finally got Claude to go as I don’t hear the t.v. anymore. Helen was so tired out, but couldn’t sleep with the t.v. so loud.

10/12/66

Helen sent Karl to Tiny Tots Play School, then she went over to Wards and picked up some other things, so she didn’t come back home until after noon. Karl liked his bedroom slippers, also his bathrobe, but I thought we had crib sheets we could swap with Linda for 2 other kinds of regular sheets. Helen called her but she was out taking the baby for a walk. Helen talked to Thanu who had the day off. Later Linda called, said fine, she would exchange sheets. She will get three pretty new ones for two old ones. I called Catherine, let her know Dorothy was coming down Friday the 14th, wanted to visit with Catherine while Richard was at the dentist in Alameda. Catherine said she would be home. I like my blanket. This makes 3 blankets I have bought for spreading over when one wanted to lay down and rest or take a nap. I fixed dinner tonight so Helen could rest. She was so tired, so after dinner, did dishes. I went in to watch t.v. Karl was happy I came in as I nearly always go up in my room right after dinner dishes are done. Karl in bed as he didn’t take a nap. Was kind of chilly this a.m. but warmed up later in the day. Claude went to his doctor Monday, 10/10. Doctor told Claude you have to stop smoking as he was already damaging his lungs, but there is hope if he stops smoking. So, since Claude hasn’t smoked since 10/10, we really hope and pray that Claude will not go back to smoking like he did before when he stopped for about 6 weeks after he had the operation.

10/14/66

I called Catherine. She said they were at the base and would come over any time now. Claude came in before Richard and Dorothy did. They brought a big cake. Put two great big candles on it. I blew them out okay. We had ice cream with cake after eating a big dinner. I was really surprised to see Claude eat cake and ice cream. He hardly ever does. Said he had to be back at St. Mary’s College by 10 p.m., so Helen took him, Karl had a fit to go. Also, he wore out Richard and Dorothy. They thought they would be gone by the time Carl and Helen came

back home, but were still here. Richard fixed the faucet in the kitchen for us before he left. Also so the water doesn’t spray out like it did. Was about 10:30 when Dorothy and Richard left. Karl wanted to stay up longer and play with his toys Helen bought him. Dorothy gave me some Blue Grass hand cream for my birthday.

10/15/66

Helen had to take Karl to the doctors this morning. Had blood test taken. Claude doesn’t go to work early on Saturday any more, so Helen was gone before Claude, but I always stay in my room unless Helen needs me to look after Karl, like when Helen works and has to leave the house early. Then I am on the job. Was 11 a.m. before I went downstairs this morning. Had my breakfast, did up the dishes, was trying to fix a butternut squash when Helen came in, tired and sleepy. Since I fell on 9/28, and hurt my hands, it’s been real hard to do some things, but I finally got the squash peeled and cut up, baked. It came out real good. Helen had some tonight, so did I. Helen brought back a new table cloth and said Karl picked it out. She sure needed a new one. Helen and Karl took a nap, so I came up in my room, wrote Georgie a letter, sent a get well card as Dorothy said Georgie had the flu along with Debbie and Mason. Hadn’t gone back to school.

10/15/66

He was sick 10/5 day he went down to see Paul. We wanted Georgie to go with us, but couldn’t with Mason sick. Today went down in the basement. Sorted out apples. Put paper between them in boxes like ________. Catherine said kept her apples from spoiling. I found 5 or 6 with bad spots, picked out among the red apples which Helen got us to eat. I made a jar of applesauce out of the bad ones or what I could of some of them. Helen fixed dinner tonight. Was kind of late. John and Margie came in and Helen showed her the new paintings, also pictures taken this summer. While Helen, Claude and Karl was having dinner, I went and mailed Georgie the dinner. I don’t like to eat so late. Reason I didn’t have dinner with them was 10 p.m. when I came up stairs. Don’t like to do dishes so late, but hate to leave them. Cooler tonight, should sleep good.

10/16/66

Everyone sleep real late this morning. I went to church, made breakfast. Even with that was a little late. Pastor spoke on faith. Used Mark 11:22 -33. Churches don’t have enough faith today. Out of 43 Alliances Churches, only 3 had really grown for a long time. Just what part of California the 43 churches was, I don’t know. Pastor didn’t say. Was a nice day. I like to walk over the hill when the weather is nice. Would have been nice to have _____ tonight as had 8 young men from Sampson’s Bible College, also Rev. Reninger, President of College with the men. I haven’t tried going out at night or to Sunday School, just to church. Give the Pastor ____ why I read the Bible. He said would read it, looked good. Hope I can put somewhere. They have books and talks. Helen fixed the crib in the front room so would be handy for Karl when he comes home from the hospital.

10/16/66

I was up in my room when Karl came up, knocked on the door asked where his mama was. I thought she had gone some place and left Karl with his dad, but went down stairs as Karl wouldn’t leave me alone. Saw Helen was asleep in the sun room. Was late, so I started dinner. Helen said when she woke up they didn’t have lunch until 3 p.m. But, I had already started dinner. It was 7 p.m. before they could eat. John and Margaret came in. They hardly ever come. They were getting ready for dinner, or already eating. It was kind of funny in a way. Helen cleaned out the fireplace late tonight then she bathed Karl, put him to bed, took a bath herself and shampooed her hair. We watched t.v. from 9 to 10 then I came upstairs, went to bed, read a while, seemed like the rest stayed up late. Someone was up after I turned out my lights.

10/17/66

Helen got up at 5 a.m. as had to be up at hospital by 7:30. Karl was having his tonsils out. Don’t remember what Helen said. I heard Claude walking in the hallway at 8 a.m., so I didn’t have to wake him. Helen called, was 10:30, I think as she was staying at the hospital as Karl wanted her. He had been throwing up. She held him and rocked him and patted him most of the day. What she told Claude and I was she finally came home. She was wore out getting up so early, not being able to rest, so laid down in the sun room, slept awhile. I fixed dinner, also did some hand laundry, little ironing, had dishes done early tonight. Came up in my room after mailing a letter to Nancy, also a birthday card to ________’s baby who will be a year old next Sunday, 10/23. I wrote and told Nancy about Karl being in the hospital. Also a letter with little Brian card.

10/18/66

Had to go after Karl. Helen put 6 year size crib in the front room for Karl. Also had everything she could think of for him to drink and eat. Helen told me when she got to the hospital, wondered where Karl was as he was not in his bed. She found him in the play room having a good time. When Helen got him home couldn’t keep him in bed. Also surprised how he ate Chicken and other solid food when I always thought had to have liquid or soft diet after one had tonsils out. Helen had to be sure Karl had plenty of water to drink. Fruit juices, also keep him quiet. So, Helen called the doctor about Karl being so lively, also was eating solid food. Wasn’t anything to worry about, but keep him inside. Did the best she could to keep him from crying. Karl had Helen up and down all night long.

10/19/66

I never went downstairs until 11 a.m. Wasn’t anything I could do, anyway, so been writing letters. Have ________ for so long with my hands. Still not so good, like before she fell on 9/28. I have to go easy. When I saw Karl was napping, came back upstairs, read, also wrote some more Dorothy and Ruby letters. Helen got a chance to nap some. I did help her out by fixing dinner, all but cutting the meat. Went over and back to the mailbox, but not sure if the letters were picked up tonight or not. Wrote a letter to Hazel this week and Nancy. I guess I may get caught up while Helen’s home working after Karl has kept him home for 2 weeks. I came up early from doing the dishes. Sure was glad to be back up in my room. Undressing, reading, writing, also listening to my radio. Have read several books this week. None large, though. Lent some books to Hazel. Hazel sent me some books. Oliver Green Radio Program.

10/21/66

Karl seems to be doing fine, but wouldn’t let Helen take a rest, so she did do 2 loads of laundry. First she’s done this week. Helen got a nice long, interesting letter from Hazel wrote the 9th, arrived today, the 21st. Hazel sounded like things were coming along okay. Now in the kitchen, Dick comes here at 7 a.m., goes to bed at 8:30, sleeps till 4:30 then children come home from school. So, Dick is getting a good rest now anyway. I haven’t done much today, dishes, some cooking, fixed a sheet for Karl’s bed. Helen stripped his bed, also put on some blankets. Helen washed a few weeks back. Also, fixed a pillow slip for Karl’s pillow. Karl using his pajamas also bathrobe and bedroom slippers. Karl seems to be happy over his robe, pj’s and sleepers. Saved them until he had his tonsil operation. _____ told Hazel he had been down first part of October. ____ Paul was up in Bend, OR. He called Hazel.

10/22/66

I didn’t go downstairs until around 11 a.m., had my breakfast, did up the dishes, fixed some butternut squash. Helen cut it up for me. I came back upstairs. Helen wasn’t feeling good, but didn’t pay any attention until she was suffering with such a severe pain in her left side. She doubled up, told me she was crying. Thought it might be her appendix, so called the doctor. He came out after Helen told him on the phone how she was suffering. Doctor called Claude. I don’t know how he got here so fast. Doctor had a bed over at Samuel Merrit Hospital. Helen said was 3 p.m. when she began to have such severe pain. Was almost unbearable. Later on that was when she called me and asked what I thought. Claude went back to work, then after dinner went out again to see Helen. That night doctor found out Helen’s appendix wasn’t causing the pain. Thought it might be a cyst on her right ovary. Karl cried for his mamma, but not too bad. Went to bed and slept all night.

10/23/66

Claude went to his church early so he could watch Karl while I went over here on Grand Avenue. Was very glad I went as was some missionaries telling about the work where they had been stationed, some place in Indonesia. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Lewis was right in the ______ when the communists came in to take over. Indonesia, that was last October, 1965. The killing, some destroyed by burning. Was sure hair raising. Mrs. Lewis was to speak tonight. Also showed some pictures. Would loved to have went, but couldn’t with Helen in the hospital and Karl still sick. Catherine called me this afternoon. She had gotten a card from Ollie. Her and Myrtle are still in Greenfield, W.VA. Won’t be home until after Thanksgiving. Going to Temple, TX. Sounded like would spend Thanksgiving at Marguerita’s place, but would go lots of other places. First, Catherine wanted to know if I had Marguerita’s address, but I do have the _______which I can give to her. Catherine also had a letter from Geneva. She was pretty downhearted. Geneva read Ollie’s card and Geneva’s letter over the phone to me. Claude went to see Helen tonight. She may be home Tuesday unless something shows up in the test. Karl was pretty good today. He didn’t cry after his mother, but got mad at his Daddy when Helen called. Karl wanted to say good bye to his mamma. Claude didn’t understand. I tried to explain that his daddy was hard of hearing and that’s the reason he didn’t know Karl wanted to say good bye on the phone. Karl went to bed, said his prayers for mamma.

10/24/66

Claude taken Helen to the doctor. Had to be at office at 11:00 a.m., so I had Karl all ready by 10:30. When Claude came out of doctor office, his car wouldn’t start. His battery was dead. Took Claude and Karl an hour and two buses to get home. Claude was so upset, he could eat hardly any lunch. Had a time finding Helen’s car keys so he could drive her car back to the store where he works. I phoned Helen’s girlfriend in Alameda and told her Helen was in the hospital and couldn’t come over. One of the ladies who had been riding with Helen. Tiny Tots called, was surprised that Helen was in the hospital. Also, lady who is head of club Helen had been going to. Both ladies were shocked over the news. Letter came today from Viola. She stated that they had a storm 10/20, was clear, sun and shiny at 8:30 a.m., but by 11 it turned dark. Started to rain, then turned to snow.

10/24/66

Viola went and picked up her little girl at school. There was almost a blizzard. The wind was blowing, saw snow come down. Couldn’t hardly see a thing through windshield. Viola was going over to see her mother, but didn’t get that far. Geneva doesn’t like where she is now. Viola wrote they don’t seem to be doing much to ease Geneva’s pain. It’s bothering Viola. She tried to see the doctor, but so far hasn’t been able to catch him. Viola wrote she was going to see if she can’t find abetter place for her mother. Claude went out to see Helen tonight. She might come home Tuesday, not sure. I called a lady named Pat Helen was looking for, but had to let her know couldn’t, now she had to get someone else. Karl has been a sweet little fellow today. Went to bed fine, said prayers for mamma. Tucked him in. He slept all through the night. Did some washing. Also ironing today.

I didn’t hear my alarm. Woke up. Was after 7 a.m. Turned on the radio. Kept thinking would get Claude up, but didn’t. About 7:30 or later, did hear Karl, so went out see if he put on his slippers and robe. Went down and put Claude’s coffee on. Came back and Claude woke up. He fixed his breakfast, also packed his lunch. Guess he got to work on time. Helen called then. Someone from San Francisco called on a pay phone, so lady at the hospital asked Helen to have me call back. Helen told me Ms. High doesn’t know where she lives, so wrote it down. I called the Heart Association to let them know Helen couldn’t come in as she was in the hospital. I had dinner almost ready tonight when Claude came home. Asked if was going out to see Helen. She may not come home until Thursday. Don’t know yet. I got hold of Mrs. High, told about Helen being in the hospital. She said, oh, that poor kid. Asked what hospital she was in. I did some more ironing today. Karl was sweet today.

Helen called about 8:30 a.m., said she would come home, send her handbag, shoes, socks, dress, coat. Claude would come pick her up around noon and then go pick up his car. Helen drove him home which she did, but was weak and kind of shaky. Had her lunch, tried to rest, but Karl wouldn’t let her. She went up to her room and locked the door and that way rested until after 4 p.m. or it might have been 5. I finished ironing what I had sprinkled down. Fixed Helen and _____ Karl’s p.j’s. Let out some more things. ______ that clothes sort of basket down in the basement before it was wrecked. Claude’s cousin from Kentucky leaving next week, so wanted Helen and Claude to come out and see them at Connie’s place in Concord. Helen called Linda today, also got some phone calls from different people. I fixed dinner, did up dishes, was up in my room by 9 p.m. Could have been earlier, but watched last part of movie on t.v. Helen put Karl to bed tonight. Was kind of chilly today, cooler at night. Should sleep good now that Helen is home.

Helen took Karl to Tiny Tots this morning. When Helen came home she was tired out and asked me to watch Karl when he came back. Also, she laid down to rest, but phone got her up, though. She had to go pick up Karl at 11:30. After lunch, Helen tried to rest again. I straightened up the house as much as I could, but didn’t vacuum as would have woke up Karl. He went to sleep in the crib. Slept for a long time. _____ ane Rose came over 4 p.m. Karl was awake and up by then. I woke up in my room reading. Someone knocked on the door and asked who it was they wanted, but no answer, so I finally went downstairs. Claude wanted to know what I did with the cookies his boss gave him for Helen. So, I got them for him, stayed down until the kids left, then got dinner and did up the dishes, came to my room a littler after 8 p.m. Got ready for bed. Also, read for awhile. Karl came up at 9 p.m. and said Dorothy was on the phone. So, I went down, talked to her. They are not coming down as Richard is in the hospital. He picked up some kind of bug when he was down here. He’s not up to driving so well. They’ll be down on the 4th of November, see us then. Dorothy asked me to call Catherine. She’s been down in bed with the flu. Sure knocked her for a loop. I gave her Leona’s address. Also told her that Richard was not able to come down this weekend. This morning GG was at her girlfriend’s in Oakland. She called me and talked a long time. Must have been 11:15 when she called because Helen talked to her first, then I talked until Harold came back with Karl. Georgie not feeling so good. Floyd been working up north on a welding job. Was gone for a week. Kids gone back to school. I had been thinking about GG lately. Was so pleased to hear from her. Wish I could to see her, though.

Helen taking Karl back to Tiny Tots. Kind of chilly today. This morning I asked her if she would pick me up at Safeway store over the hill on Grand Avenue. I walked down. Was shopping when Helen came in store looking for me. Things have jumped up in the past two weeks. I bought over $9.00 of groceries today. Later, Helen wrote Mike but Mike came back. Arrived today. Helen felt bad that Mike didn’t get her letter to him. Helen went and picked up Karl. I checked my groceries, put them away. Came upstairs, rested awhile, then Helen said she just had to lay down. Doctor told her to rest every day and take life easy for ten days. Karl wouldn’t nap, but play quiet for the afternoon. Only thing he got so lonely, he came up and wanted me to come downstairs. I did. I washed out two sweaters for Karl. Also a winter shirt. Got things lined up for dinner. ______ was kind of late tonight. Was 8:30 when I came up in my room. We all get up late this morning because Claude doesn’t go to work early on Saturday. Linda called, said that she was coming over. Had just wrote her a note asking her to let us know when she was coming, as wanted to make some salad. She likes it real well. Linda came on the bus. Must have been 2 p.m. After she arrived tired out as baby gets kind of heavy. She also had diaper rash. The baby is so cute. She crawls all over now. Also pulls herself up and stands alone for a little while, but tries to dance so she falls down, but doesn’t cry. We all had some ice cream. I didn’t make any cookies or cake as I didn’t know she was coming over. We took Linda and the baby home about 5:10. When we left the house we just stopped long enough for Linda to get out and get Thanu come and get the baby. When we came back it was 6 p.m. Had to put the green beans on the stove and left. So, they were cooking while we were gone. Helen’s friend from the club, so Helen took her out and put Karl to bed first. I had the dishes done, trash burned and was up in my room when Helen came home. Mailed to card to _____ Jean today. Wrote a letter to Daniel tonight. Hope to mail it on the way to church.

I learned they do have testimony at the Wednesday night prayer meeting. I was earlier this morning. Was nice warm day, enjoyed the walk over to church, but when I got back home no one was here.
